The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland and Wales, also known as Great Britain, and Northern Ireland.

London is the capital of England, is also the largest city and has a population of over 7,500,000. Birmingham is the second largest city in England with a population of over 1,006,500.

The UK has a growing population.

In mid-2006 the UK was home to 60, 587,300 people, of which 50,762,900 lived in England. Approximately one in five people in the UK were under the age of sixteen and one in six people were sixty-five years old or over.

England is divided into counties and areas, metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties, Greater London, unitary authorities, districts, boroughs and cities.
